LabH6 - Laboratoire Hubert Curien and iXblue Hardened Fibers joint laboratory


iXblue and the Laboratoire Hubert Curien (UJM/ CNRS / Institut d’Optique Graduate School) are proud to announce the creation of LabH6, a joint research laboratory focusing on the study of optical fibers and optical fiber-based sensors in harsh environments.

iXblue’s photonics division and the Hubert Curien Laboratory, long time partners since 2006 in the frame of numerous funded projects and PhD programs studying the vulnerability of optical fibers in diverse radiative environments, are opening up their joint research laboratory.

Complementary skills


This new joint laboratory called « LabH6 » allows us to leverage on the complementary strengths of both partners. iXblue’s R&D capabilities in optical fibers and components will benefit from the radiation test facilities, the simulation tools and overall characterization expertise developed for the description of the behavior of photonics systems in diverse extreme environments gathered within the Hubert Curien laboratory… and vice-versa.

In depth material knowledge for technological breakthroughs


The LabH6 ultimate goal is to understand and identify the main mechanisms at the origin of the degradation of materials and optical fibers exposed to radiative environments by studying samples dug out from the vast inventory of preform and fiber samples accumulated over the years. This knowledge will in turn allow us to develop and validate our simulation tools designed to predict accurately both material and optical fiber response to radiation exposure. This approach applies to many domains such as space, medical, nuclear or high energy physics and the technical and scientific results will allow, we believe, potential breakthroughs in these fields.

About Laboratoire Hubert Currien


Created in 2006, the Hubert Curien laboratory is a joint research unit (UMR 5516) of the Jean Monnet University, Saint-Etienne, the National Research Centre "CNRS" and the Institut d’Optique Graduate School. It is composed of about 240 members who work on scientific topics related to optics, photonics and microwave, computer science, telecom and image.
